Countering Online Extremism
CODE PAKISTAN is promoting peace, tolerance, and inclusivity in Pakistan.
In the past several years, Pakistan has witnessed an increasing correlation between online extremism and offline display of hatred and violence. Incidences such as the Safoora Goth massacre in 2015 and the lynching of Mashal Khan over accusations of blasphemy in the same year are just a few stories among the many that are indicative of a rise in extremism and extremist ideologies among the youth. The evolution of information technology and the subsequent surge of internet dependency has further evinced the severity of extremism and intolerance among the younger generation.
While the progression of information technology and its wide scale accessibility has been beneficial to achieving tremendous advancements in various fields of study, it comes with certain drawbacks that are most recognizable through the display of online extremism through social media, and more specifically in the nature of its use by the youth. Social media platforms have become a focal platform for the dissemination of unauthenticated narratives, many of which are predicated on hate and divisiveness, leaving young minds vulnerable to influence on a scale that is global and immediate. More so, the lack of physical interaction in online communication offers a false sense of confidence, which is often detrimental to the value of social tolerance and flames online extremism. For the youth, the problem is further magnified as this mistaken sense leads to the sharing of hostile and hateful material that can be categorized under offences such as hate-speech, cyber-bullying, and incitement to violence. The resulting effect of such behavior is damaging to human development as it can lead to decline in empathy, increased intolerance, isolation, and a breakdown in social relationships.
In recognition of the abovementioned problem, CODE PAKISTAN initiated a project in collaboration with Facebook and NED University to raise awareness about online extremism and encourage the constructive use of social media among the students of NED University to promote increased tolerance and social inclusivity on campus and to counter online extremism. To this effect, CODE PAKISTAN organized two different trainings at NED University with the assistance of Facebook trainers on the subject of “Digital Citizenship and the Responsible Use of Social Media” and “How to Design an Effective Online Awareness Campaign.”
Subsequent to the two trainings that were held in February 2020, 12 student trainers were selected from the participant pool to further sensitize the rest of the student body of NED University on the importance of responsibly using social media and positive online engagement. The student-led awareness sessions took place over a span of 3 months starting from July. Concurrent to these sessions, students were also engaged in the exercise of designing their own online awareness campaigns. Participants from the training sessions earlier this year were divided into 8 groups and given guidance through the process of designing and creating their own online awareness campaigns with mentoring sessions provided by a selection of panel members comprised of Facebook, CODE PAKISTAN, and other subject-matter experts. The best campaigns were selected by the panelists and launched on Facebook for wide-scale outreach.
