CODE PAKISTAN report gets widespread coverage in the news

May 9, 2018: Various Pakistani news outlets gave widespread coverage to the launch of the Report on Addressing Overcrowding in Prisons by Reducing Pre-Conviction Detention in Pakistan, published by CODE PAKISTAN, in collaboration with the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The report was formally launched yesterday (May 8, 2018). Daily Dawn published a detailed report about the launch of the report and its finding in the print version of the newspaper for today titled “Pakistani prisons house 57pc more inmates than authorized capacity: report.” The report is available online on the news group’s website. Another newspaper Pakistan Observer published a detailed news report titled “Prisons in Pakistan house 57 per cent more inmates than allowed: report” in the print version of the newspaper for today. The report is available online on the news group’s website. Dunya News, a leading news group of Pakistan, also carries the report on its website. Several other TV channels, including Dawn News, Geo News, and Samaa TV, also aired news reports about the launch of the Report on Addressing Overcrowding in Prisons by Reducing Pre-Conviction Detention.

An online news portal UrduPoint also published a news report about the publication and launch of the report on its website. Another online news service Times International News carried a story about the launch of the report with the title \”Prisons in Pakistan holding 57% more prisoners than their capacity: study Reports.\” The report can be accessed online here.

All the news reports cover the basic findings of the report as well as the proceedings of the formal launch of the event. Highlighting of CODE PAKISTAN\’s effort in the national dailies will go a long way in CODE PAKISTAN\’s efforts at addressing overcrowding in prisons by reducing pre-conviction detention in Pakistan. The formal launch ceremony of the report was chaired by the National Coordinator NACTA Mr. Ihsan Ghani Khan. Other panelists on the occasion were Chairman of the Law and Justice Commission (LJCP) Dr. Raheem Awan, Head of the Delegation of the ICRC Mr. Reto Stocker, and Founder CODE PAKISTAN Mr. Dilawar Khan.

Later on, on May 11, 2018, Daily Dawn published in Editorial based on the findings of the Report on Addressing Overcrowding in Prisons by reducing Pre-Conviction Detention. It was followed by Daily The News publishing an editorial based on the findings of the report on May 14, 2018.
