Research and analysis is an essential element of the work of CODE PAKISTAN. Over the course of our journey, we have produced several research studies, which have not only been enhancing our understanding of the concerned subjects but have also informed future interventions in the field. Some of those studies are also available for free download on our website.
Our very first project, the University Madrasah Interaction Program (UMIP), besides having a strong peacebuilding component, also had a research component that resulted in the production of two important reports, which could inform further research or interventions in the field. Similarly, our subsequent project called the National Consultations on Afghan Refugees in Pakistan also resulted in two important documents on Afghan refugees. One of them was a backgrounder booklet prepared to guide the discussion during the consultations but turned out to be a valuable resource on the legal and administrative regime applicable to Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The Report of the National Consultations on Afghan Refugees in Pakistan, on the other hand, is a comprehensive analysis of the Afghan refugee situation in the country as well as the possible way forward on the subject. The report greatly benefits from the input given by experts in the consultative process that led to the production of the report. We published another comprehensive research study titled Addressing Overcrowding in Prisons by Reducing Pre-conviction Detention in Pakistan in May 2018. The thorough research conducted by CODE PAKISTAN for the report has involved consulting all the relevant national laws, rulings, regulations, and international legal norms; gathering statistical data on prisons, police, prosecution, and the judiciary; holding several rounds of consultations and interviews with criminal justice officials from the executive and the judiciary at the federal and provincial levels; and making use of dozens of national and international reports, journals, and news articles. In connection with the aforementioned study, CODE PAKISTAN has produced another research report providing detailed recommendations on the implementation of Point 20 of the National Action Plan concerning the revamping of the criminal justice system.
At the end of the year 2019, CODE PAKISTAN produced two seminal research reports on the important subjects of countering on-campus violent extremism in universities and the road ahead for Afghan refugees in Pakistan. In the year 2019, CODE PAKISTAN also worked on another report on another very important subject of mainstreaming of madrassahs.
